Competitions

The traditional ORIE student project competition is open to undergraduate students for project works in the field of industrial engineering-operations research.

Who May Participate?

Students may apply for the competition individually or as a team. There is no restriction on the number of members in the teams. Those who will participate in the competition must be undergraduate students on Jan. 1, 2018.

Evaluation Criteria

Projects will be evaluated according to the criteria such as identification and importance of the problem, accurate and appropriate use of OR/IE approaches, originality value of the project, independence from ongoing projects, possible widespread effects and applicability, success of the results obtained and writing report.

Participation Process

The first application to the competition is made with an extended abstract of the project work. The extended abstract must be prepared in accordance with the format rules on this link and must not exceed 4 pages with the cover page.

This abstract should include the project reason, the scope, the methods used and developed in the project, the overall evaluation and results of the project. The abstract document should not include any information that would lead to an understanding of the university where the project is made, the identity of the project team members and the faculty members who are consulting the project. Abstracts containing this information are strictly not evaluated. Extended abstracts should be sent in the form of pdf file by e-mail to yaem2018Ogrenci@gmail.com until April 12, 2018 at 24:00.

The project teams who passed the preliminary round among the first applications evaluated by the jury have the right to participate in the semi-final. Competitors who are chosen as semifinalists must prepare a project report that will not exceed 15 pages in accordance with the format rules of Journal of Industrial Engineering (https://www.mmo.org.tr/yayin/endustri-muhendisligi-dergisi/yazim-esaslari_). The report should not include any information that would lead to an understanding of the university where the project is made, the identity of the project team members and the faculty members who are consulting the project. Reports containing this information are strictly not evaluated. All data, software code and other supporting materials used to obtain the results in the report must be send with the report to the address yaem2018Ogrenci@gmail.com via e-mail. If the total size of the files to be uploaded exceeds the e-mail limits, the related documents may be sent by multiple e-mails. In such a case, all the emails send is associated with which application must be sepecified to avoid any doubt.

As a result of the jury evaluation on the prepared project reports, at most three persons from each team on behalf of 8 finalist teams are invited to make a presentation in front of jury members and congress participants. After the jury evaluations to be made on the presentations and reports, the projects deemed worthy of an award are declared.

The projects presented at the Congress are evaluated for the publication in the Journal of Industrial Engineering.
